Jamie Murray and Laura Robson line up for the Wimbledon mixed doubles

Jamie Murray is hoping to repeat his Wimbledon mixed doubles triumph of 2007, this time with former junior champion Laura Robson.
The pair have applied to the All England Club for a wildcard entry into a form of the game in which Robson, 16, has already done well, reaching the Hopman Cup final with Murray's brother Andy in Perth back in January and then the quarter-finals of the Australian Open women's doubles two weeks later.

Wozniacki Struggling!

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki bounced back from a horror start to her third-round match against Maria Kirilenko to book her place in the last 16 of the Sony Ericsson Open with a 1-6 6-1 6-4 win.

The Danish teenager, ranked second in the world, was reduced to firefighting in the first set as she managed to win just 22% of points on second serve. But she was much improved in the second set, holding her nerve to convert the two break points she created before out-battling her Russian opponent in the third.

She will next face another Russian, 22nd seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Francesca Schiavone 7-5 6-3.

Roger Federer Rewrites The History With his 15th Grand Slam Title

The tennis lovers would have had a feast for their eyes on Sunday evening, if they had got a chance for watching the Wimbledon 2009 final match.

The Swiss tennis champion Roger Federer made tennis history Sunday, winning the sixth Wimbledon title in 7 years to claim an all-time best 15th Grand Slam trophy 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 over American Andy Roddick.

The Swiss, only man to appear in seven consecutive Wimbledon finals, re-wrote the records in front of tennis royalty - Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras, the seven-time All England club champion with whom he shared 14 Grand Slam honours. Federer's victory was his 60th career trophy and third Wimbledon finals victory over Roddick, whom he also beat in 2004 and 2005. The Swiss has defeated the American in 19 of 21 meetings.

Federer will take back the number one ranking he lost last summer to Rafael Nadal, regaining the position he held for a record 237 weeks.

The Swiss was appearing in his sixth consecutive Grand Slam final dating to Roland Garros last year.

In top spot Serena hopes to end 2009

The Australian Open and Wimbledon champion defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6(6), 7-5 in her first match in the Maroon Group and could regain the world number one spot from Dinara Safina this week.
One more match Williams wants to win than Safina to overtake. This year the Russian has a point to prove after failing to win any of her round robin matches last year and coming under fierce criticism throughout 2009 for her inability to win a grand slam title so far despite being world number one.
When asked about her chances of overtaking Safina this week, Williams said, “It would be awesome but I'm in a tough part of the section of the draw, so we'll look what happens."
It is indeed a tough group and Serena will now need to beat either her sister or arch-rival Elena Dementieva to reach the semi-finals. Serena has had some classic battles with Dementieva this year, winning a memorable Wimbledon semi-final.
It’s been an incredibly successful year for Serena but unfortunately it will probably be defined by her now infamous antics in the US Open semi-finals against Kim Clijsters.
The incident was broadcast live around the world and the watching public were able to hear the full explicit rant thanks to the many courtside microphones. It will probably continue to dog Serena for a while and she was questioned again on it after her match in Doha.
“It was out of character and I really regret it,” she told the Times. “I am a passionate person and I just lost it because it was an iffy call at a key moment. I wrote the line judge a really long letter of apology and she understood.”

Polgar: Texas Tech next weekend to coming The Wimbledon of Chess'

The 2009 SPICE Cup International Invitational Tournament will bring a high powered lineup of world class young chess talent to Texas Tech. The contest is set to start beginning Saturday.
The tournament, in its third year, will once again set the record for the highest rated international invitational round robin tournament in the United States. This is equivalent to bringing Wimbledon or the PGA championship to Texas Tech and Lubbock.

SPICE Cup will take place from Saturday through Sept. 29 at the Matador Room in the Student Union on the Tech campus.
The 16 top serrated players will be broken into two groups. The six player A Group will meet in a category 16 event up from category 15 in 2008. The players are all grandmasters with an average age of just 20 and an average rating is 2,631, based on the September 2009 World Chess Federation rating list.
The 10 players forming the B Group tournament, a Category 11 event, will be mostly grandmasters and international masters, with an average rating of 2,502. Three of the 10 players in this pair are members of the Texas Tech Knight Raiders chess team.

Wimbledon champion to Meet Bristol's - teenager Joe Hill

Bristol teenager Joe Hill is celebrating after becoming a HSBC Road to Wimbledon national champion on the famous grass courts of the All England Club.
And four time Wimbledon semi finalist Tim Henman was on hand to present the prizes, which included a £250 coaching grant.
The 14 year old from Coombe Dingle, who accompany Redland Green School, won the national 14 and under boys' doubles claim with partner Simon Pritchard, of Wales, at the weekend.
Hill and Pritchard made up for their disappointing early departure in the singles by beating Ryan Frankel and Jordan Parker 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles final.
“It was a wonderful experience,” said Hill. “I was meant to go further in the singles, as was my partner, so we spoke after that and said, ‘Let’s make sure we do really well in the doubles’.

“We thought we would be No 4 seeds, but we were No 2 and we had the hardest draw, so we did actually well to get to the final.”
Once there, their victory was assureing as they saw off the challenge of Frankel and Parker with relative abandon.
And their success is all the more appreciable given they never get to train together.
“I only get to see Simon at the big challenger, but we are good friends, so we always try to play doubles together,” said Hill.
“We play really well together and because we are such good friends, it is not like I am playing with someone for the first time.
“He is a very good player and I know that if I play badly, he is going to keep me in the match.”
Hill had bygone departured the singles with a three set conquest to Kent’s Steven Blythe but remained philosophical about his singles conquest.
“When Tim Henman was 14, he wasn’t top in his age group and he went on to be No 4 in the world,” said Hill.
Henman, who took a coaching clinic at the challenger, said: “Joseph played greatly well and I look forward to seeing how his tennis progresses.”

POWER RANKINGS

With each passing week the WTA official ranking system makes a bigger mockery of itself.
Somehow, Dinara Safina remains in the top spot, despite Serena Williams claiming the Wimbledon title in swashbuckling fashion.Safina has engineered an impressive rise over the past couple of seasons and the attention of her failure to win a Grand Slam - while holding the No.1 ranking - does her no favors.The WTA's new chief executive, Stacey Allaster, needs to make a revamp of the system a priority or risk further damage to the Tour's credibility.

Sure, Williams plays in considerably fewer tournaments and her performances in smaller events have been mixed. But how can the woman who has won three of the last four Slams not be considered the best in the world?Here is the latest version of the Yahoo! Sports power rankings, with pre-Wimbledon ratings in parentheses. A familiar name heads the list.

Wimbledon Championship ends on historic note.

Roger Federer's epic and historic victory in the men's singles final brought the 123rd Wimbledon Championships to a fitting climax in the evening sunshine on Centre Court. After four and a quarter hours he finally overcame the American Andy Roddick in a 30-game fifth set, the longest in Wimbledon history, to claim a record 15th Grand Slam title. How appropriate it was that Pete Sampras, with whom Federer had shared the record following his success last month at the French Open, was a surprise visitor, joining other greats such as Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg in the Royal Box to see history made.

Federer's sixth Wimbledon in seven years of appearances in the final also moves him within one singles victory at The Championships of Sampras, who shares the record of seven with the 19th century English hero, William Renshaw.

Federer had always looked on course for the final once the top seed, Rafael Nadal, pulled out with knee problems. The 27 years old Swiss dropped only one set en route to the final and his progress became increasingly assured as round succeeded round.

There is no doubt that the roof will be needed at future Championships but, for this year, at least, the fact that it remained open was a blessing, an indication that fine weather ensured the punctual finish to an excellent tournament.
